60x60 Video Showing Review

The 60x60 Video Display showed at the Fleischmann Planetarium played 60 videos that consisted of 60 different videos from various artists and audio tracks from different artists.  Each video was 1 min long each video was made by one artists and other artists composed the audio.  This played and the Art 345 class had their diptychs displayed. The audio that was played was good and interesting I enjoyed listening to it. However, I found the videos that were displayed with music to be less interesting. I really felt like the video was too overwhelming. It was very disorienting and I couldn’t fully concentrate. I felt that I could better listen to the audio when I shut my eyes.

One of the strange videos that played was one called time man. At first I thought that this was very interesting and I liked the concept of the time man. However, it became a little too overwhelming and I felt that the story that was in the video went on way to long. I think that it would have been better if it was shortened. I feel that I enjoyed our diptychs much better because after each minute there was something new to look at and the same type of video for over 15 videos.

Our videos from the Art 345 class was much more enteraining to watch and I was a little disappointed that more people didn’t come to see the exhibit. If our Art 345 class didn’t have our videos in it would anybody have even shown up?

The only thing that I would change is to make the projection different. We were in a planetarium it would have been interesting to see the video expanded to be all around the room. Overall I am really glad that I went to see it but I don’t know if I would be able to sit through it again.

Assignment #8 Projection

For this assignment we had to create something that we wanted to be projected. From the beginning I knew that I wanted to project on something different and not just on a wall. So I decided I wanted to project onto trees. I thought that it would be interesting to at first have little tiny creatures come out onto the trees and move around however I could figure out how I could make that happen for the size of trees I wanted to use. So I changed my mind and decided that I would see where the music will take me. I comprised different music tracks together to blend well and took that and decided I want to have some type of animation moving/dancing on the trees. Thats when I decided I wanted to use the animation dance figures from the game Just Dance. Once I had the animation figures I edited them to go smoothly with the music. Then when I projected them onto the trees it made the trees come alive and seem like they were dancing. Because I choose a lot of neon color dancers the projection had to be displayed on the trees when it was dark out or it would not be visible on the trees.

Here is the video that I projected onto the trees.

Here is a little snippet of what the projection looked like on the trees.

Assignment #7 Audio Tour Walk Through Time

For this assignment I decided to make it more simple than my last post and not include any interaction in the audio tour. I decided that I wanted to have different sound effects from different times throughout history. Which is why I titled the piece Walk Through Time because I wanted the listener to feel like they were being transported through different times. It starts by walking on the path by the Truckee river away from downtown. The time era in the audio begins in the late 1800s continuing into the distant future. Halfway through the audio will ask listeners to turn back around and head back towards downtown. This assignment was interesting and fun to create. I enjoyed making it and I tried to be precise on where certain sounds should be. It took many hours editing this audio but it was well worth it.

Assignment #7 Mapping

For this assignment I decided to create an audio Tour of the Truckee River. I have found a common pathway for where the tour will take place. The tour will be comprised of two different tours one heading away from downtown, and the other heading toward downtown. Throughout the tour I want there to be sounds throughout history with different stories. When the tour begins it will start in the past and at the end of that tour will be the present. The same with the second tour as well.

This is where the tour will began and end:

Then will began away from downtown:

Continuing in this Direction will have a certain sounds along the path will be two activities.

The first activity will be to sit on a bench and to close their eyes and just listen to their surroundings:

The next activity will be to go down by the river find a stone and try to skip it across:

Since this is the midpoint of the whole tour I think I want to give people the option to get some coffee:

From there the tour will head back the way it came going towards downtown. At this point a whole different experience will take place with different sounds.

Along this tour there will be one activity which is to experiment with this sculpture and other sculptures around it:

Assignment #6 Dual Channel Video Diptych

This Assignment I had to create a Dual Channel Video Diptych using the audio from the last assignment and footage that I shot myself. I wanted to included an assortment of video clips that I shot, so I used video of performers on stage with instruments, people dancing, Pluto dancing, and throughout the whole video a tree in the background barley noticeable at times but still there. I wanted this video to show a wide variety of different activities. With the effects I used and how I matched the video clips to the audio I was able to achieve a sort of tuning effect, like someone is trying to figure out what they are watching. I decided for both the left and right side videos I wanted to use the same video clips but just with different effects. I think that these videos side by side show a chaos yet at the same time order which make them work so well together.

Assignment #5 Mixed Sound Piece

For this Assignment I had to create a mixed sound piece composed of the sounds created from the last four assignments. For the beginning of the sound piece I used the audio from my musical instrument and added a little effects to it. For my voice recording I looped the sound through the whole sound piece. I decided to add some effects to it so that when you listen to it you can't tell that it is a voice talking. Next I used the mashed record audio of the Dorsey album. Following that, I used the audio loop sound, which then leads to another record of the four mashed pieces. Ending the Sound piece with the off record Pam Russo record and completing it with a few seconds of the audio loop sound. My inspiration for the sound piece was a way of communicating, like when you have to change the dial on an old TV or radio and try to find the right station.

Assignment #4 Voice Recording

For this assignment I had to record my own voice to be used for the next assignment. In deciding what I was going to record I decided that I wanted to record me saying something that everyone knew. So I recorded my voice saying supercalifragilisticexpialidocious in three different ways.

Assignment #3 Marclay cut up record

Vinyl records today are not that popular and most households don't have a record player in their home. This means that there are many records out there collecting dust. However, Christian Marclay and other artists have found a way to take these records and combining them together to make sculptures and see the sounds they can make. Christian Marclay took multiple records cut them up and reconnected the different piece to be whole again, then played them to see what they sounded like and some of them sound quite interesting. So for this assignment I had to do the same thing and see what would happen with the records. I decided since I don't own any records, I would go to a thrift store and see what kinds of records I could find, and pick the ones that might sound interesting when cut up. I grabbed about 10 different kinds of records and just started to cut them up.

For my first idea I decided that I wanted to cut up the record in the shape of an iPhone. I wanted to do this because the way that we listen to music today is with our phones.

For my next idea I just took the 4 records cut them up into different sizes and pieced them back together and this how it turned out.

Here is the audio for the third record: https://soundcloud.com/izzy-deguero/mashed

For the last record I had to drill another how in the record so it could be played off centered. I decided to choose Pam Russo It works for me because it was a very upbeat record.

Assignment #2 Make a Musical Instrument

When making your own musical instrument there are endless of possibilities and for my instrument I wanted to create something different and unique. So the first thing that came to my mind was John Cage and the unique instruments that he made. I decided to go to a thrift store and look around to see what I could find that might be good for a musical instrument. While I was there I found many things which include an old black briefcase, some Christmas ornaments, a child's keyboard, a rubber Frisbee, drumsticks, green Styrofoam, a roll of shiny material with holes, and a plastic toy clamp. Once I got all of these items I needed to make an instrument. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to contain the musical instrument inside the black briefcase in order to make it compact. I also knew that I wanted to incorporate water into the instrument. I then realized that if I filled enough of the Christmas ornaments together and connected them all I may be able to get the water noise that I was looking for. Next I took apart the child's keyboard and I decided to use just the keys and the metal grate that was the speakers. I learned that when I rubbed the drumsticks across the metal grates it created an interesting noise. So I attached one of the metal grates to lid of the briefcase using the shiny material to attach it and the other grate I stuck to the Styrofoam. This made me decided to also attach the keyboard keys to the Styrofoam which made the plastic keyboard keys sound interesting. Next I needed to figure out what to do with the plastic frisbee and I found that if I attached it to the side of the briefcase with the plastic toy clamp then when hitting the frisbee with the drumstick it made a great bass noise. After figuring out how to fit everything into the suitcase I was then done with making my musical instrument and it came together quite well.

Assignment #1 Found sound looping Self-Portrait

This is a Self-Portrait of me, made of looping found sound. I took moments throughout my day to listen to the sounds around me. I listened to the silence and heard sounds that I don't hear or notice. In my sound loop I recorded the sound of water from a swimming pool. I love to swim but I never really took a minute to just listen to the water. The second sound I recorded was the air-conditioning in my house. The air-conditioning is such a background noise that it just blends in and I don't listen to it. Yet when I did listen to it, it was loud and annoying. The next sound I recorded was me walking barefoot on the floor of my house which is Laminate wood flooring. I never noticed before, that it made quite a loud noise, which I thought was interesting. Another sound that I decided to record was the sound of an airplane and a car. I recorded this sound because living in Reno I hear it every single day and like the rest of the sounds I don't really notice the loudness of it. Every single day I go onto YouTube and watch videos, but Monday - Friday I watch a YouTube channel called Good Mythical Morning. I decided to record the opening of the show because it is something that the show says every morning and it is just so iconic for them to say. I feel like it is a part of who I am. Another sound that is definitely who I am is the sound of pills moving in the container or falling on the floor. I have to take these pills everyday and hear the noise that it makes and really listening to it made me realize that it is not silent and it makes a lot of noise. All of the sounds that I recorded really represent my Self-Portrait.
